People say that part of rebuilding a social network is to find groups of like-minded people, people who share your interests.
What I like to do best is to lollygag in bed until I get hungry or until I get a headache. I don’t know of any group of people that wants to spend the day in bed with me. If I did, I think my marriage would have ended very differently.
Aside from lying in bed, I like music, and I like theater.
On Monday nights I’m usually at the open mic night at TCAN. Most of the time the musicians are playing for each other, so I’m the audience. People are nice, friendly enough, but they’re, you know, musicians.
Last Sunday I went to check out another group, Playwrights Platform, that meets to read plays. They usually read several short plays, but the night I went they were reading a full-length play. Three local actors did the cold reading. After the play, the playwright went to the stage and listened to people’s opinions. That was great.
I hung around and talked to several people: the playwright, the woman who emceed the event, the president of the organization, a random playwright, the actress who read the part of Myra. But in general, these people are more interesting to talk to than musicians because they’re, you know, writers.
