He notices everything

He liked the Roboraptor my mother got him, but he’s a little afraid of it. As with most things he’s afraid of, he’s trying to learn all about it. How do its sensors work? What kinds of modes can you put him in.

The boy knows more than he lets on. Some things are obvious. Beth sleeps in the bedroom, and I sleep on the fold-out sofa in the sun room. He’s starting to refer to the bed in the bedroom as Mama’s bed.

He notices everything, so I’m sure he’s noticed a change in our Friday night ritual, but he hasn’t said anything. Beth and I used to drink kiddush from the same cup. A little over a month ago, I got a new kiddush cup, so now we don’t share wine. After candle lighting, I give the boy his blessing. Afterwards I would recite the closing verses of Eishet Chayil for Beth, and the boy would join me. Since her Shabbat breakdown almost a month ago, we go straight from the boy’s blessing to kiddush.

As his birthday got closer, I noticed I kept coming back to the idea that he knows already. I think I’m just trying to console myself that when we do tell him, it won’t be a complete surprise to him.
